Be sure to turn in your donations for Commander Steve Shuga’s fundraising project! He’s working towards his secondary goal of $75,000! Donations can be turned in during your DCC meeting, the Department Convention, or mailed to the Department Headquarters.

Last month Department Commander Steve Shuga reached his fundraising goal of raising $50,000 for PROJECT: VetRelief! The Commander has decided to raise his goal to $75,000 to continue his efforts in providing funds for our Legion programs. He knows that with the generosity of the Legion Family and the passion they have for the Florida Legion programs, this goal is very attainable! We know you can help him reach his secondary goal, and ultimately help veterans and their families through our various programs!

PROJECT: VetRelief Spotlight

Michael & Jeremy

Michael Beaven has recovered from his recent surgery and is now back in the office as of Monday, February 26th. With having him back, this means PROJECT: VetRelief will now have two people processing financial assistance cases; which is something our program has never had before. We are really thrilled to have two folks on the PVR Team doing their best to help our service members and their families!
 
As you probably already know, both Michael and Jeremy are veterans themselves. They have a different skill set and background that they bring to our organization. However, both are passionate about supporting their fellow comrades in whatever capacity they can. Having both of them working closely together will create a balance in our processes that will ultimately provide a higher quality service to those who need us.
 
Both gentlemen will be working on a part time basis, but their schedules are balanced so that a case worker will be in the office every work day. Below is their contact information and hours they will be in the office:

Advocate Corner:

“How to Build a Board Ready Case”

We have put together a list of items that will help “speed up” the
application process. Our goal is to help our veterans and theirfamilies in a promptly manner. However, the process can be delayed when we are waiting on supporting documentation or an Advocate to do an interview on our behalf. There have been situtions where a completed case has been submitted to the Board for Approval that same day because the Advocate followed these steps below.
 
1. Be sure application is filled out correctly. Ensure that the applicant, veteran or family member, has completed the entire financial assistance application.
 
One major thing to verify with the applicant is the Financial Information, or Section 4 on Page 3 of the form. It’s important that the applicant fill in the information for reoccurring monthly income and expenses; do not include one-time revenue or expense items. Another thing that gets overlooked is the signature on the bottom of Page 3. We will not be able to process a case without a signature.
 
2. Include all supporting documents. All required documents are necessary to complete a case: DD-214, Military ID Card or VA Card, Marriage and/or Birth Certificants (if applicable), Copy of Bills needing paid, Letter of Hardship, Pay Stubs, Social Security or Disability Award Letters. Additional documents may be necessary for completion, such as: adoption papers, employment offer letter, bank statements, etc.
 
The letter of hardship should explain how the applicant has fallen onto hard times and does not need to be a lengthy document of their entire life story. It should also state what type of funding they are seeking. (EX: one month’s rent, electric and gas bill, etc.)
 
One of the guidelines for funding is sustainability. To prove that an applicant is sustainable, proof of income is required.
 
3. Fill out Follow Up Report (PVR) or Investigator’s Report (TFA). Since you are already working with the applicant, go ahead and fill out the appropriate Follow Up or Investigator’s Report and send in with the veteran’s application.

Legion Family Spotlight: Department Commander’s Charity of Choice

 

This year, the American Legion, Department of Florida’s Commander, Steve Shuga, chose PROJECT: VetRelief as his primary charity of choice. He indicated that the first $50,000 raised during his year will be earmarked for our program. Anything after that, funds will go towards the remaining Florida Legion programs, unless donations are marked specifically for PROJECT: VetRelief.

So far, the total amount raised this year is $32,153.00; that’s $17,847 short. We want to make sure that we help him reach his goal of $50,000!

Commander Shuga is in the middle of his District visits. While he’s making his rounds, present your donation to him and he will turn them into the Department Headquarters Office. And remember, any Post that donates through the Commander’s Charity will also be eligible for the PVR Challenge and receive awards during the Department Convention in July.

Get well soon, Michael Beaven!

As many of you know, our Case Worker, Michael Beaven, kicked off 2018 with an extensive cardiovascular surgery. This procedure was something he had been waiting for since 2012. The surgery went very well and he has already started to feel a difference during his recovery process. After spending two weeks in the ICU, he was finally able to go home and sleep in his own bed!

Michael would like for us to pass along that he is very thankful for the thoughts and prayers from his Legion Family. Although we are anxiously waiting for him to return, we hope that he takes the necessary time to heal.

WE ARE GROWING – More cases equals more funding!

As you can see from the chart on the left, PROJECT: VetRelief has been able to increase the number of military families we help through our financial assistance program. Already, we have helped 11 more families and given out an additional $17,630.54 than we did at this time last year. This is something we are very proud of!

All the support that we provide derives from funds donated from the Legion Family, corporations, and individuals who believe in the good work we do! We are so grateful for those who contribute to our organization. But, as the amount of financial cases increase, the demand for additional funding increases, as well.

You can help us continue supporting our service members by donating through the Legion Family Challenge, Commander’s charity or Post fundraising events.

The Challenge Continues…

The Challenge is simple – raise $1.00 per member of your Post!
 
The PVR Challenge Goal is based on the Membership Goals provided by National. For example, Post 208’s Membership Goal is 2,507, therefore their goal is to raise $2,507. This goal can be reached by making a one-time donation for their goal amount, or providing several donations throughout the year.
 
All individual donations submitted between July 1, 2017 and June 15, 2018 will automatically go towards the Challenge. Also, any donation that is turned in through the Commander’s Project and earmarked for PVR will also count.
  • Donations can be sent to: PROJECT: VetRelief, 1912A Lee Road, Orlando, FL 32810
  • Donations must be turned in by June 15, 2018 to count towards recognition awards
  • Money raised during Post fundraising events will also count
Starting next month we will post a leader board of all donations received and which District is leading the way. Awards will be given at Department Convention based on percentage of goal met, not by the total dollar amount given.

Legion Family Spotlight

5th District: 2-Liter Bottle Challenge

The Mighty 5th District fully understands the needs of Veterans and embraces PROJECT:VetRelief’s mission to fill these needs. We looked around for a way to raise money and have fun at the same time. Our “Bottle Challenge” was what we finally came up with.
 
We started with a 2-liter bottle; which can hold approximately $700 in dimes. Our thought was that with our 16 Posts within our District, we could potentially raise $11,200! However, our members decided to take it a step further to make a larger impact; they wanted to donate more than just dimes! Some Posts have simply cut off the tops of the bottle and other Posts redesigned the bottle altogether. To date, the 5th District has raised about $2,000 so far!
 
Additionally, we have sent two bottles to the 15th District; of which, one has already been filled. Since the 5th and 15th Districts are already filling bottles, we challenge you, or those in the other Districts, to see if you can catch up to us and raise more!! – Are you up for the challenge?

WELCOME TO THE TEAM, JEREMY!

Jeremy recently joined the PVR Team as a Case Worker. He is a Navy veteran who served for 11 years, stationed primarily in Hawaii, and had two tours in Africa.
 
Transitioning back into the civilian lifestyle was not easy for Jeremy, but he thankfully had a support system to get him through his trying times. He is very passionate about helping his fellow comrades through the similar struggles he overcame.
 
Please help us welcome him to the team!

Things you should know!

 
► Michael Beaven will be out of the office beginning January 3rd and will be undergoing surgery. He will be gone for approximately two months. If you’d like to send words of encouragement, please send to Department Headquarters with attention to Jennifer Cooper.
 
► PVR does not fund security deposits when moving into a new
place of residence.
 
► An applicant must live within the state of Florida for 120 days in order to be eligible for assistance.
 
► The PVR office was closed starting December 23rd and reopened on January 3rd. Please be patient as we work through calls received during that time.

Don’t forget to tell us about your PROJECT: VetRelief fundraising events! We want to help you promote it in our monthly newsletters, on Facebook, and on our website. There are also promotional materials that we can send to you.
 
Also – Commander Steve Shuga’s primary charity of choice is PROJECT: VetRelief. Any donation turned in and marked as “Commander’s Project” will count towards his goal and deposited into the Legion bank account. During the Department Convention in
July 2018, one large check, or donation, will be issued to PROJECT: VetRelief.
 
However, you can still write donations directly to PROJECT: VetRelief and write Commander’s Project in the memo line to count towards his goal of $50,000! All donations from Posts, whether to the Commander’s Project, or made directly to PROJECT: VetRelief, will count towards the PVR Challenge!

Legion Family Spotlight:

Post 63 – Challenge 22 Event
 
American Legion, Post 63 in Winter Garden successfully completed its inaugural event, Challenge 22, and raised more than $12,000 for PROJECT: VetRelief! The event was held on Saturday, November 18th, 2017, with the hopes to bring greater awareness to their community of the alarming 22 veteran suicides that happen every day. Backed by the motto, #22UntilZero, this fundraiser/5k walk and concert was derived from the popular silkies-ruck walk that have been helping younger veterans cope with post war loss.
 
Although recruiting and renewing membership is always a goal, the volunteered event committee, led by Ms. Ashley Moir and Mr. Kurt Gies, decided that the event must highlight the epidemic of veteran suicides; which personally impacted their members. The goal was to reach the younger veteran community, and offer help and hope to those struggling with PTSD and life off the battlefield.
 
“Hopefully this is just the beginning of a nationwide movement of the American Legion to bring awareness to the community behind solving this crisis”, said Vice Commander Kurt Gies. “The VA does a good job fixing the broken bones and putting a bandage on the wounds, but because their government, they can’t touch the sole or spirit. It’s time we put God back into the equation, as our Preamble states ‘For God and Country’, and God comes first”.
 
They chose PROJECT: VetRelief as the beneficiary of Challenge 22and their HOPE is that we can maybe deter a veteran suicide by providing financial assistance during their time of need. Ms. Moir and Mr. Gies, along with the committee, have made sure this event can be duplicated by creating a template and established resourses so that other Legion Posts could hold a similar event.

FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

As you may or may not know, PROJECT: VetRelief has recently seen a tremendous increase in the number of financial assistance applications. In fact, when comparing the first 4 months of the fiscal
year, we have already seen a 21% growth rate and have given $11,610.44 more than we did last year in emergency assistance. Those numbers are only going to increase as we continue through the Legion year.
 
Additionally, the American Legion National Headquarters changed
their funding guidelines for their Temporary Financial Assistance program. Now, applicants must be an American Legion
member in good standing or serving on activity duty orders to be
eligible. An applicant must also have a child 17 years or younger and
have exhaused all military options for assistance before applying.
 
The result of these changes will impact PROJECT: Vetrelief significantly by creating an additional financial strain to our program.
 
We are asking that you help ensure that we are able to continue our
mission by making a year-end contribution. As you make your final
2017 tax-deductible donations, please consider the immediate, and in some cases life altering, impact you can make on Florida’s veterans, active duty military members, and their families.
 
Your year-end gift will move us one step closer to reaching our goal of helping one veteran or military family for every work day – that’s 260 families. Best wishes for a bright and beautiful holiday season, from our family here at PROJECT: VetRelief.

2017 Fall Conference:

This month is The American Legion, Department of Florida Fall Conference . The event will be held at the Renaissance at Sea World in Orlando, FL from November 3-5, 2017.
 
Below is the list of opportunities to join us and learn more about the program. There will only be ONE chance to take the Advocate Training class and it’s open to the entire Legion Family. We are adding another course for Post Commanders and Adjutants for them to see how the Post can get involved.

The Challenge is Back!

The PVR Challenge is back to support the growing needs of Florida veterans, active duty miliary and their families. Over the past 3 years we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of financial assistance applications. In fact, the amount of funds we’ve been able to distrubute to our service members in their time of need has doubled each year!
 
We are anticipating the need for our program to grow again this year. If we use the same trend as we’ve seen each year, we project the amount we will need to continue to support our fellow comrades is over $115,000!
 
We are asking for every member to the Legion Family donate $1.00 to continue our mission.
 
The PVR Challenge is based off the Posts’s membership goal and the Challenge to every Post is to raise $1.00 per member between now and May 31, 2018. This goal can be reached by a Post making a one-time donation, or several donations given within the year.
 
Remember, the Department Commander, Steve Shuga, chose PROJECT: VetRelief to receive the first $50,000 raised for his Commander’s project. Anything submitted to the Legion earmarked for the Commander’s Charity will account for the PVR Challenge.

National Legion Changes TFA Guidelines

The American Legion National Headquarters has changed the funding criteria for the Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) Program. During the recent Fall National Executive Committee meeting in October Resolution 8, Restructure of Temporary Financial Assistance Policy , was passed to adopt the following changes:
 
• A single onetime non-repayable Temporary Financial Assistance grant of up to $1,500 will be permitted to qualified applicants
 
• A qualifying veteran is defined as a member of the United States Armed Forces serving on federal orders current under Title 10 of the United States Code, inclusive of all components, or any current member of The American Legion
 
• Formal documentation is required as part of the Temporary Financial Assistance investigation process and application packet for verification that all other forms of financial assistance available have been sought and applied for, or have already been denied
 
• Annual cumulative expenditure of Temporary Financial Assistance grants may not exceed $700,000 without prior approval of each chairman of the Americanism and Finance Commissions and the national commander
 
The changes made to National’s TFA program will directly affect PROJECT: VetRelief and increase our financial burden. We strongly urge all Legion Family members to participate in the PVR Challenge so that we can continue to serve our service members!

 

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

We are so thrilled to learn about all of the upcoming fundraising events through the Legion Family. Remember, the Legion’s Department Commander, Steve Shuga, chose PROJECT: VetRelief as his primary charity of choice. He would like for the Legion Family to help him reach his goal of $50,000.
 
Here’s how the Commander has chosen for the donations to be processed:
Any donation turned in and marked as “Commander’s Project” will count towards his goal and deposited into the Legion bank account. During the Department Convention in June 2018, one large check, or donation, will be issued to PROJECT: VetRelief.
 
Donations written directly to PROJECT: VetRelief will be deposited into the PVR account and funds will be used automatically for financial assistance cases. These donations will not count towards the Commander’s goal.
 
However, both forms of donations will count towards the PVR Challenge. The Challenge details are still the same as last year where Posts are encouraged to donate $1.00 per member of their Post. Challange incentives will be announced during the Fall Conference in November.

We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to all of our vendors, clients, engineers, and friends who came out for our 4th annual charity golf tournament to support PROJECT:VetRelief.  With your help we were able to raise $41,889!

PROJECT: VetRelief provides all of their services to active duty military, veterans and their immediate family members at no cost. Therefore, they rely heavily on the generosity of community leaders within the state of Florida – just like you!

On the day of the event, once again, we received praise not only for supporting our veterans but that we kept the FUN in fundraising!
